7 Critical Issues on Handicap Accessibility Needs in a HomeThe Council for Disability Rights says these issues help identify whether a property is accessible or can be easily retrofitted: 1. Entrance: The incline at a building entrance or front door shouldn't exceed 30 inches (so that a ramp of reasonable length can be installed). If the incline is more than 30 inches, a lift is probably necessary. 2. Stories: Houses should be one story unless the ground floor features a bedroom and bath or an elevator (estimated cost: $12,000 to $20,000) can be installed. 3. Doorways: Doorjambs should be at least 30 inches apart (36 inches is preferred). Offset hinges often allow for a slight increase in doorway width. 4. Halls: Hallways should be at least 36 inches wide (48 inches is preferred). 5. Kitchen: Opposing walls or cabinets should be spaced at least 40 inches apart. 6. Bathroom: Floor space should allow for a 5-foot turning radius (a 5-by-8-foot space is preferred). 7. Parking: A garage, alley access, or a route from parking or public transportation is necessary.
